And check it twice….
It’s that time of year. I don’t mean to be obnoxious like those stores that put up Christmas decorations before Halloween is over, but what kind of gift blogger would I be if I didn’t get you thinking.
As of today, you have two months until Christmas. So I’ve found a couple of great resources from another blog: Mary Organizes.

Don’t forget about the people who planned your party….
Although I have to admit that this is not a gift category I’ve given a lot of thought to. But leave it to a good friend (and the mom-to-be I’ve been talking about in my baby shower blogs) to teach the master just how it’s done.
In short, if all goes well, you’re not hosting your own baby shower or bridal shower. With bridal showers, it tends to be one of the responsibilities of bridesmaids, hence taking care of your girls with good bridesmaids’ gifts. But baby showers, or any other event hosted by someone else in honor of you, are a different story.
There were a few of us pulling the strings on the recent baby shower, although the mom-to-be did more than her share to be fair. So at the end of her shower she honored us with a pretty awesome gift. One so great, I wish I had thought of it.
She gave us small, pretty reusable bags (I’m using mine as a lunch bag) filled with custom bath and body products made by a local business and a journal.
Suffice it to say, I’m still impressed.
It takes a little work to get a good favor done…
Pinterest was my source for baby shower favor ideas, especially once the mom-to-be had come up with her theme. My friend, and the soon to be mommy, actually created a private board that we could use to pin and share ideas. I highly recommend it. Based on the boards, I came up with a concept and design for her baby shower and started sourcing the favors.
Sometimes the hardest part about DIY is finding sources. It look a while but I was finally able to pin down a few (pun intended). Take what you need (trust me – finding mason jars sounds easier than it is).
Once the favors are done, then it’s a matter of displaying them to their best advantage. In this case the cake table was great! But I’ve seen (and placed) favors at place settings or at a special table by the door so that guests could take one as they leave. One hostess went from table to table and handed them out to each guests in thanks for their attendance. So my suggestion is that you do whatever works – no wrong answers here!
Showers (baby or bridal) done right are optimal occasions for gift giving in all forms…
I had the genuine pleasure of attending and participating in my line’s sister’s baby shower last weekend, and like everything she does it was epic. Her theme was “bowties and mustaches” and being the marketing guru she is, the theme was interwoven into everything including the favors (courtesy of me)!
More to come on the favors via my next post!

Because it’s easily the most customizable and fun gift…
A good friend and co-worker recently retired (it’s going around hence the previous posts) and at his farewell luncheon he was gifted a tee shirt that he proceeded to don and wear around the office which expressed the sentiment, “I’m retired and you’re not.”
While it was a bittersweet moment, it was also genius!
But this thoughtful gift from one of my office sisters got me to thinking… if you can gift a tee for a retirement, why not birthdays, weddings, bar mitzvahs, and any other gift giving occasion you can think of.
Some of my favorites come from Cafe Press and Zazzle. Zazzle is also great for custom tee-shirts. So is Custom Ink.
I can’t believe it’s been a year…
Yesterday marked the one-year anniversary of my first post establishing Gift About Town, which had been a dream for many years. A year ago, when I was furloughed due to the government shut-down (and yes, for those who can connect the dots, I am a Federal government employee) I knew that it was now or never, so to speak.
Hence, the start of this blog on October 5th 2013.
So, I want to take a moment to thank my family for always reading and commenting; my friends and line sisters for liking my page (Facebook too) and encouraging me to keep posting, and in some cases, proving technical advice and support; and my office sisters who have great ideas that never fail to inspire new blog series.
Thank you, thank you, thank you. I’m inspired!
